Somatic Bodywork & Behavioral Training

A Co-Regulated Approach for Reactive, Sensitive, and Fearful Dogs

Calming the Mind Starts with Softening the Body

When a dog suffers from reactivity, anxiety, or fear, traditional behavioral training alone can hit a ceiling if their body remains trapped in a chronic "fight-or-flight" state. Physical tension and nervous system hyper-vigilance directly fuel emotional reactivity.

To create real, lasting change, California Canine Wellness has partnered with Dogtown Dog Training to offer an integrative service combining massage and somatic bodywork with expert behavioral modification.

We work together to soothe your dog's nervous system from the inside out, paving the way for safer, calmer, and more effective learning.

The Dual-Pillar Approach

Combining physical release with hands-on behavioral guidance addresses both sides of the mind-body connection.

Somatic Bodywork

  • Jennifer Phillips, California Canine Wellness

  • Focus: Utilizing feather-light, still, and mindful contact to down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system, clear postural bracing, and release deep-seated physical stress.

  • Benefit: Enables your dog to feel physically safe in their own body so they can step out of constant hyper-vigilance.

Gentle Behavioral Training & Management

  • Lisa Verdugo, Dogtown Dog Training

  • Focus: Practical, choice-led behavioral modification, desensitization, and real-world handling techniques tailored for reactive or fearful dogs.

  • Benefit: Gives you and your dog actionable skills to navigate triggers with confidence, trust, and connection.

Who This Service Is For?

This specialized joint offering is designed specifically for dogs who need extra patience, safety, and physical co-regulation:

  • Reactive or Guarded Dogs: Dogs who struggle with triggers (strangers, other dogs, loud noise) and carry chronic physical tension or tightness.

  • Fearful & Sensitive Companions: Dogs who get overwhelmed easily, shut down, or live in a persistent state of alertness.

  • Dogs Hitting Training Plateaus: Companions who know their cues but cannot apply them when emotional arousal or physical stiffness spikes.

  • Rescue & Rehabilitation Cases: Dogs processing past trauma who require a gentle, choice-led approach to human touch and environmental exposure.

Practical Somatic Techniques You'll Learn

As part of your joint program, you will be guided through our custom Somatic Touch Protocol to support your dog daily at home:

  • Head, Neck & Spine Regulation: Techniques like Resting Palm, Under-Jaw Support, Ear Strokes, and Throat Line Strokes to trigger parasympathetic vagal relaxation.

  • Torso & Respiration Release: Jaw Hinge Circles, Full Back Sweeps, Breath-Synced Rib Press, and Rib Rocking to ease chewing/reactivity tension and lower respiratory rate through tactile co-regulation.

  • Limb & Sacral Grounding: Spine Extension Pulls, Tail Sways, and Paw Pad Presses to decompress the spine, loosen pelvic posture, and anchor spatial awareness.

Recognizing Release Signals: You'll learn to spot your dog's subtle signs of physical shift—such as yawning, soft lip licking, deep exhales, whole-body shake-offs, and soft body weight sinking—signaling their nervous system has successfully shifted to rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog is reactive or anxious around new people. Is it safe to do bodywork?

Yes. Our entire methodology is strictly choice-led and non-coercive. We never force contact or restrain a guarded dog. Having a professional trainer present ensures complete physical safety, environmental setup, and behavioral reading while bodywork is introduced at your dog's chosen pace.

How is this different from standard dog training or standard dog massage?

Standard training often focuses purely on behavior output, while standard massage focuses purely on muscles. Our combined approach addresses the root cause: nervous system arousal and physical bracing. By relaxing the body first, behavioral learning happens faster and lasts longer.

Where do these joint sessions take place?

We offer mobile, in-home sessions across the West San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles areas, allowing your dog to stay in the environment where they feel safest.
